Things to Remember When Moving Into An Apartment With Your Significant Other

family living room

If you are moving into your new apartment home at Arcadia Run with your significant other and have not lived with them previously, it will be an adjustment. Below, we have listed all of the things you should remember when moving in with your significant other for the first time!

It’s okay to have your own things: If you are merging all of your belongings together and are protective of certain things, let your partner know! Doing this will ensure that next time you reach for your favorite coffee mug, hopefully it will be right where you left it.

Get to know each other’s pet peeves: When you discover something your partner does at home that you are not used to, don’t get upset or annoyed over it. Have a conversation with them and let them know what is on your mind. If you fold towels different ways, agree on a certain way together that will make you both satisfied.

Maintain some independence: Just because you live together, doesn’t mean you have to spend every waking moment with each other! Remember to maintain relationships with your own friends and create a balance in your life. Make a point to do things on your own once a week so you don’t spend an unhealthy amount of time together.

Set a budget: Since you now share an apartment, you are going to have to manage your money together so that you still have funds to do things, like go see a concert at Jiffy Lube Live! Sit down and sort out a weekly budget that you can stick to together and make sure to factor in rent, food, shopping, travel, etc.

Make compromises: You are going to have to make compromises now that it’s not just you living in your home. You will probably have to compromise on apartment décor, a TV schedule, candle scents, closet space, and many other things. Communication is key, so make sure that both of you talk about what you want and need.

Try not to sweat the small stuff: There may be times where you get into small disagreements, but that is okay, it’s bound to happen! If someone leaves dishes in the sink overnight, it’s not worth fighting over! Don’t let it get you down and don’t hold a grudge about small things that are easily resolved.

A living situation with any new roommate can be a learning experience, especially if it’s with your significant other! Don’t forget to enjoy it, and take advantage of everything here at Arcadia Run in Manassas, VA together!

5 Ways To Have a Great Relationship With Your Roommate

At Arcadia Run, we offer a number of floor plan options to fit your lifestyle, whether you are living on your own, have a family, or are moving in with a roommate. When it comes to sharing a home with a roommate, you want to make sure that living together doesn’t cause unwanted tension, so check out our tips for having a great relationship with your roommate!

Know each other’s schedule: This is one of those things that you and your roommate should discuss right off the bat! Know each other’s work/school hours, weekly activities, etc., so that your communication runs smoothly. Make sure to send a quick text to each other if your plans change so you are both aware of the apartment status, like if the temperature should be changed, or the trash taken out.

Respect privacy: It is important to make sure you don’t invade your roommate’s personal space, as it can become awkward if they feel you are invading their privacy. Always knock on your roommate’s door before entering and ask permission to borrow things from each other.

Split responsibilities: There are some chores in a household that no one ever likes to do, but someone has to! Equally carry the weight of household chores around the apartment, like taking out the trash, vacuuming the carpet, sweeping the floors, etc. It is a good idea to make an agreement or schedule so that you are on the same page with who does what and when!

Fridge zones: A common discussion among roommates is about one of the most important things in life: food! It is important to make sure you talk about things you might share, like condiments or spices, and things you absolutely do not want to share. The best way to go about this is to create “zones” within the fridge, where you each get your own shelf and then there is a common zone for shared items.

Agree on guest boundaries: Together, discuss when you would like to host guests and who will be visiting the apartment. If your roommate is working at home, don’t have a get together as it could be distracting to their work. Make sure to let each other know if you will have overnight or weekend guests so that you can plan accordingly.

Although you may have heard some roommate horror stories, there are ways to stay friendly and live in a peaceful way! For more information on moving into a brand new apartment home at Arcadia Run, visit www.arcadiarun.com!

Tips for Entertaining in Your Apartment Home

Although apartment homes at Arcadia Run are spacious and allow lots of room for guests, sometimes it can be a hassle moving around and creating enough space for everyone. Below we shared some tips on how to most efficiently entertain a group, party, or crowd in your new apartment home at Arcadia Run!

If you choose to utilize your beautiful granite countertop as your main kitchen seating area, move the chairs and set up a buffet-style spread on the counter when you have guests over. This way, people can grab what they want and then move about the apartment to sit anywhere they feel most comfortable.

Set the atmosphere with small details around your apartment home. If you’re having people over to watch the big game, hang up some fun décor supporting your favorite team!  If you’re hosting an intimate wine night, light a few candles and set out some hors d’oeuvres.

Utilize the numerous closets in your Arcadia Run apartment home by letting guests keep their larger belongings, like coats and bags, in a closet. This will allow more space for your guests to sit, mingle, play games, and eat!

Use disposable dishes and utensils so that you don’t end up with a large pile of dirty dishes in the sink. This makes for easy cleanup and more time to have fun with everyone!

You may not have enough room in your refrigerator for the all of the (beer)verages you plan on serving at a get together. There are two alternative options for keeping your drinks ice cold when you are entertaining. The first option is to use a cooler filled with ice that can also double as an extra seat when closed. The second option is to fill your sink with ice and use it as an open cooler!

For a nice breeze, open your windows or sliding doors, as lots of body heat in a space can warm up the room quickly. It is especially nice in the summer months to get some fresh air!

Now that you have all of the tips and tricks of having a successful get together in an apartment home, there’s no better time to rent a brand new one at Arcadia Run! Visit www.arcadiarun.com for more information!

7 Apartment Hacks You Need to Know Now

We know that you’re already excited about moving into a brand new apartment home with luxury apartment features and brand new amenities at Arcadia Run. But, even with plenty of storage and modern finishes in your apartment home, it’s always good to learn new ways to save even more space and time. Below we have put together a list of some of the best apartment hacks for apartment living, decorating, and storing!

best apartment hacks

If there is just not enough room at your place for everyone you invited to your morning yoga session, this is where stackable chairs really come in handy. They create more space if you’re entertaining, and are easier to move around when you are cleaning! For super space savers, you can also buy stackable end tables and stools.

Mason jars can be used to store any kind of small household item, and better yet, they are a relatively inexpensive purchase at your local craft store. You can attach them to the wall or line them up along the counter for a nice way to store and display small items.

Wires from your television, cable box, Internet router, etc., can be a real eyesore. Look for creative ways to hide these wires like a strategically placed stack of books or photo frame.

Let’s face it, some of us are “collectors” and like having lots of things, but anyone with their own space knows that those boxes take up too much room! Some of the most common culprits are shoeboxes, cereal boxes, boxed freezer items, and electronics. If you have used an item more than a few times, throw away the original box. If there is only one ice-pop left, take it out of the box!

Don’t forget that height is your best friend in an apartment home, so think about how you can use the entire space. Utilize the beautiful 42” designer kitchen cabinets to store all of your kitchen needs and more. If you love to decorate, but need more surfaces, purchase wall shelves that create dimension in a room.

It is a lot easier to justify buying a piece of furniture when it also doubles as something else! Some of our favorites are trundle beds, coffee tables that double as an ottoman, pieces with storage space inside, or anything foldable.

Today, Pinterest is our go-to for everything do-it-yourself. DIY projects are a great way to save some money to put towards other things or create something that you wouldn’t be able to buy in a store.

Prepare Your Apartment for the Holidays

If you didn’t already know, the winter holidays are almost here! It can be an overwhelming yet fun time of the year, but sometimes things are forgotten when it comes to preparing your apartment home for guests and colder weather. At Arcadia Run we want you (and your apartment) to be ready to bring on the holidays, so here is a list of “to remembers” for this season!

Add the warmth – When the weather starts to get cold, your breezy summer sheets are not going to cut it. Replace bed linens with warmer sheets, like flannel, or add a fleece blanket to make sure you and your holiday guests will stay warm and comfy at night. Also consider area rugs for places like the hallway, because nothing is worse than walking on hard floors with bare feet in December!

Clean – This may be an obvious step, but it doesn’t just mean doing the dishes! During the summer and fall months, allergens, pollen, and dust can get trapped in things like carpets and curtains, or rest on the tops of surfaces. Do a deep cleaning of your apartment to make sure you start fresh this season!

Get ahead of yourself – If you expect that you will have guests visiting for the holidays, stock up on winter home essentials to make your hosting days easier. Items like extra blankets, hot chocolate or tea, and movies & games will save you some last minute trips to the store.

Convert your wardrobe – There is no need to keep your tank tops and mini skirts hanging in the closet when it is getting cold outside. Because of the abundant storage space in Arcadia Run apartments, you can rotate wardrobes according to the season, and store your flip-flops for warmer days at the pool.

Declutter, then decorate – The first thing that many of us jump to during the holidays is decorating, because let’s face it; it is the most fun part! It is important to declutter your space BEFORE you decorate to avoid making a larger mess than you started with. Visit the new Arcadia Run Clubhouse for some decorating tips and tricks!

Buy winter essentials early – Often times during the thick of the cold months, stores will run out of certain “high demand” seasonal items.  These everyday items like lint rollers, static spray, slippers, gift-wrapping supplies, and even calendars will go fast, so get them while you can! And at Arcadia Run, you will have plenty of room to keep everything.

Declutter Your Apartment This November

Sometimes we find that our apartments are organized, but there is just so much stuff to keep track of! Although new apartment homes at Arcadia Run each come with multiple closets for ample storage space, and 42” designer kitchen cabinets for all of your kitchen needs, everyone experiences clutter at some point. Check out these 7 tips below for decluttering your space this November!

1. Utilize Wall Space

Not only do shelves help maximize space for knick knacks, mail, and supplies, but you can use them for decorations and even attach hooks to hang your coats and bags.

2. An Everyday Tub For Essentials

By the front door, place a tub or basket for things that you somehow lose right before you are about to leave the apartment. It’s a great place to put your umbrella, boots, bags, scarves, and hats.

3. Keep Your Shower Simple

If you know what products work for you, stick to a few bottles and keep them in one spot in the shower so it is easier to find what you’re looking for. When you find them getting low, replenish your stock before they run out, this way you wont get stuck washing your body with shampoo!

4. Spend 15 Minutes A Day Staying Organized

It is very important if you want to stay organized to keep up the everyday maintenance of your home. Take at least 15 minutes out of your day to organize your space and catch up with any mess you created that day or have been putting off.

5. Create Systems

When your space is decluttered, the rest will follow. Keep organized by creating systems for yourself like making Monday “vacuum day” or Thursday “trash day”. It is also important to organize your digital space such as emails and important online documents by creating folders. Another obvious but often forgotten about system is to keep your remotes all in one container close to the TV so you don’t miss that important football game that is coming on in 5 minutes.

6. Respond To Mail As You Receive It

Mail seems to be one of those things that we let pile up and then forget about. Often times it is not ideal, but if you respond to mail when you get it, there wont be late bills and forgotten coupons. If you don’t think you will use the mail or it is junk, throw it away!

7. Good Enough is Enough

There are few rare occasions that someone’s space will be 100% organized and decluttered. When you find a system and level of organization that you can live with, that is good enough!

Redecorate Your Apartment: Fall 2015

We love the fall season at Arcadia Run and it is quickly approaching here in Manassas, VA! When the seasons change, so do your home needs. If you want your new apartment home to reflect the season, with just the right amount of your personal style, here are some easy tips to make your apartment cozy and warm this fall!

Add layers – Just like you will be adding layers of clothing to your wardrobe for chillier months, you can layer your apartment too! Add comfy area rugs, blankets, and pillows to keep your apartment warm and inviting.

Rethink your colors – If you want some trendy ideas for fall, take a look at Pantone’s Fall 2015 colors to use for room accents, like a blanket or a vase. If you’re feeling extra ambitious, repaint a piece of old furniture to add more color to the apartment.

Seasonal décor – You can never go wrong with the classic autumn décor, like pumpkins, fall foliage, and a wreath for the front door. You can go as big or as subtle as you want with these fall inspired details.

Cover it up – If you have any wooden seating in your home, consider a slipcover or seat cushion to add a little more comfort. Slipcovers can also add an instant color makeover to any couch or chair!

Replace scents – Gone are the days when your air fresheners, hand soaps, and candles smell like a fruity cocktail or the ocean breeze. Replace the scents in your home with pumpkin, spice, and everything nice!

Flowers – Bringing in seasonal fresh flowers can brighten up any room. To add a little twist, put dried flowers in a vase for a rustic feel.

Frame your summer memories – With the warm weather on the outs, you will most likely be spending more time inside. Print out your favorite summer photos and place them in frames around your apartment.

6 Ways to Beat the End of Summer Heat at Arcadia Run

Everyone know that August and early September can get super hot, especially here in Manassas, VA! We have some great tips on how to beat the heat for the last few weeks of the summer at Arcadia Run!

Outside your apartment

  •  Take a dip in the pool: Our brand new resort style pool is perfect for cooling off! You can swim some laps, dip your feet in, or float around on a raft. No matter what you prefer, our pool is going to be a refreshing escape from the heat.
  • Go for a hike: Virginia includes some of the most diverse landscapes, from farms to mountains and beaches. Convenient for Arcadia Run residents, Hemlock Overlook Regional Parkis located right here in Manassas! It’s a great place to take a hike through the shade of a forest and discover some of Virginia’s beautiful nature trails.
  • Watch a movie: Luckily for Arcadia Run residents, we have a brand new theater room in our clubhouse! Grab a group of friends and chill out in the clubhouse as you lounge and watch your favorite flick.

Inside your apartment

  • Block sunny windows: If staying inside is more your thing to do to avoid the swelter outside, block the sunlight from coming in with curtains or blinds. This will keep your new apartment home nice and cool.
  • Limit oven use: Although our new apartments here at Arcadia Run are equipped with state of the art kitchen appliances, oven use in any home will contribute to heat. Eat more fresh foods while it’s hot out, like a nice summer salad or sushi, so you’re not cooking (food or yourself) in the heat.
  • Buy indoor plants: The energy plants need to survive is from sunlight and water, but they also keep the air around themselves cool. The air around plants is cooler because instead of reflecting the energy (heat) in the air, they absorb it.
